About this blog

I created this blog to share my research of my Shimp family. This blog focuses on the Johannes Shimp and Philip Shimp lines that originated in New Jersey in the mid 1700s.

Philip Schimpf and Elizabeth:

The Philip Shimp page lists the descendants of Phillip and Elisabeth Schimpf. This was last updated a few years ago. I will try to update it within the next few months and add my sources.

Johannes Schimpf and Elizabeth Weickert:

I am working on a page that lists the descendants of Johannes Shimp and Elizabeth Weickert. I hope to post it within the next few weeks.

Henry R Shimp & Sarah E Ayers

Henry R Shimp is the son of Henry Shimp and Susanna Harris and grandson of Philip Shimp and Catharine Rocap.
Henry R Shimp was born June 1844 in New Jersey (1900 US census). He can be found living with his parents on the 1850 US, 1855 NJ, 1860 US, 1865 NJ, and 1870 US censuses. His father died in 1879 and he is living with his mother on the 1880 US and 1885 NJ censuses. He married Sarah Ayers on 17 August 1886 in Salem, Salem, New Jersey (marriage record). The marriage record states that Henry was 40 years old, a farmer from Quinton, New Jersey and that this was his first marriage. It also states that Sarah was 19 years old, from Quinton, New Jersey and that this was her first marriage.

Children of Henry Shimp and Sarah Ayers:
1. Mary J Shimp
Mary J Shimp was born 25 September 1887 in Salem County, New Jersey. Her birth record lists her parents as Henry Shimp and Sarah E Ayers.
2. Henry Rocap Shimp
Henry R Shimp was born 17 March 1893 in Quinton, Salem, New Jersey. His birth record lists his parents as Henry R Shimp and Sarah E Ayers. The birth record states that he was born in "Q" which I assumed was Quinton but his WWI and WWII draft registrations state that he was born in Quinton. The birth record says his name is Henry R but the draft registrations state his name as Henry Rocap Shimp. Henry died March 1963 in New Jersey (social security death index).

The family can be found on the 1900 US census, but I have not been able to find them on any later censuses. The WWI draft registration for Henry R (son) states that he is single and supports his mother and sister. From this I believe that Henry R (father) died between 1900 and 1917. The WWII draft registration for Henry R (son) lists Mary Ferris as the person who will always know where he is living. I believe this is his sister Mary but I have not been able to find any records to verify this yet. This also leads me to believe that his mother had died.

Children of Henry and Anna Lawrence:
                     1. Harry Jr Lawrence (b 1915, New Jersey) [censuses and findagrave] There is a
findagrave memorial for Harry Jr here. I have not conducted any research on Harry so I
do not know if he married or if this death date is correct. The last census he is found on
is the 1940 US census. He was 24 and living with his parents.  More research is needed
                     to find more about him.
                     2. Katherine Lawrence (1918-1918) She is buried in St Mary's Roman Catholic
Cemetery in Salem, Salem, New Jersey.

         C. Albert Lawrence
A death record for a Albert Lawrence can be found in New Jersey Deaths and Burials, 1720-
1988. It states that he died on 10 April 1880 in Salem, Salem, New Jersey. He was 1 year old.
Albert is listed on the 1880 census. He is 0 years of age. The month of his birth is hard to read.
It looks like Ar so it could be April or August. The census also lists 8/12 as his age. I don't
know if that means he is 8 months old at the time of the census, which was June 9 1880 or if he
was 8 months old on April 1st, which is the date most censuses were based on. It could also
mean he was born in the 8th month of the year. What we can determine is that he was born in
1879 and he died in April of 1880. I have not been able to find where he was buried.

          D. Bessie Lawrence

          E. Leida Lawrence
Leida Lawrence is the daughter of Henry and Hannah Lawrence. She was born 8 May 1884 in
Salem City, Salem, New Jersey (New Jersey, Births, 1670-1980).

          H. Mattie Lawrence

          I. Ethel Lawrence
Ethel Lawrence is the son of Henry and Hannah Lawrence. She was born on 22 Oct 1891 in
Salem City, Salem, New Jersey (New Jersey, Births, 1670-1980).

Anna DePeugh was born February 1857 in Salem, New Jersey (1900 US census and son Howard's marriage record) and died in 1914. Jesse Press and Anna Depugh were married 10 Mar 1877 in Salem, Salem, New Jersey. A record of their marriage can be found in New Jersey, Marriages 1678-1985. The record states that Jesse was 21 and Anna was 20. Jesse's parents are listed as David K and Sarah. Anna's parents are listed as James L and Adaline. I hope my jumbled notes make sense. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

          A. Howard Press
Howard Press is the son of Jesse Press and Anna DePugh. He was born 20 Nov 1878 in Salem
East Ward, Salem, New Jersey (New Jersey, Births, 1660-1980).
Marriage #1: Howard married Maggie between 1900 and 1905 (based on censuses--Howard
lived with his parents in 1900 and Howard and Maggie are together in 1905). Maggie M was
born about 1882 and she died 6 Mar 1906 (see Howard's marriage record to his second wife). I
might have found a findagrave memorial for Maggie here but more research is needed.
Marriage #2: Howard married Rachel May Shimp on 16 Nov 1907 in Vigoco, Indiana
(Indiana Marriages, 1811-2007). The marriage record lists a lot of information. It states that
Howard Press was born 21 Nov 1877 in Salem, New Jersey. His parents are Jesse Press and
Anna DePeugh, both born in Salem, New Jersey and both resided in Salem, NJ at the time of
the wedding. This is his second marriage. His first marriage ended due to death on March 6,
1906 (from this we learn that Maggie died in 1906). Chas DePeugh is also listed on the record.
This might be a family member of Howard's from his mother's side of the family-more research
is needed. The marriage record also states that (Rachel) May Shimp was born 4 June 1886 in
Quinton, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Thomas C (Charles according to future
censuses/Challis according to findagrave) Shimp and Ellen Flanagan both of whom resided in
Salem, NJ. This is her first marriage.
1910 US Census: Howard and May can be found on the 1910 US census in Salem West Ward,
Salem, NJ. They had one daughter, Phillis, who was born within the year.
Howard's death: Howard died in Aug 1911 and is buried in Eastview Cemetery in Salem, Salem
New Jersey on 14 Aug 1911 at the age of 33. You can find his findagrave memorial here.

1920 US Census: May and Phillis can be found living with May's parents (Charles and Ellen
Shimp) and her sister (Margaret Shimp) in Salem, Salem, NJ in 1920. May Press is widowed
         and Phillis is aged 10.
May's 2nd Marriage: Rachel May Shimp Press remarried to Nathan Biddle. This was also
Nathan's second marriage. His first marriage was to Elizabeth. He was born Jan 1872
         (findagrave and censuses).
1930 US Census: Nathan Biddle (head), Rachel Mae Biddle (wife) and Phyllis Press
(stepdaughter) are living in Salem, Salem, NJ in 1930. Nathan's age at his 1st marriage is listed
as 25. Rachel Mae's age at her first marriage is listed as 21.
Nathan Biddle's Death: Nathan Biddle died on 23 Nov 1930 and is buried in Eastview
Cemetery in Salem, Salem, NJ. You can view his findagrave memorial here.
Phyliss married Harold Stuart between 1930 and 1940. They had at least one child that I found
         on the 1930 census.
May Shimp Press Biddle died in 1980 and is buried in the Eastview Cemetery in Salem, Salem,
New Jersey. You can view her burial information at findagrave here.

Salem, Salem, New Jersey (New Jersey, Births, 1660-1980). The record lists his parents as
Jesse Press and Pugh. Adaline died 21 May 1880 in Salem, Salem, New Jersey (New Jersey

          C. Boy Press
New Jersey Deaths and Burials, 1720-1988 has a death record for a boy who died 7 February
1884 in Salem, Salem, New Jersey. The record lists his parents as Jesse Press and Annie. The
only children listed on the 1880 US Census are Howard and Adaline. We know that Howard
lived until 1914 so this child must have been born between 1880 and Feb 1884.

          D. Ida Press
Ida Press is the daughter of Jesse Press and Anna DePugh. She is listed on the 1885 NJ Census
as 0-4 years old. From this we can determine that she was born between 1881-1885.

          E. Arthur Press
Arthur Press is the son of Jesse Press and Anna Depugh. He was born on 3 Dec 1887 in

Press and Anna DePugh. Arthur married Omelia Thompson who was born Nov. 1891 to Isaac
Thompson and Susan Merrion. [I have found some information on the Isaac and Susan and
their family. If you would like any of the information, please contact me.]
Arthur and Amelia can be found on the following censuses: 1910 US; 1915 NJ, and 1920 US.
Arthur's younger brother, Jesse Press, is living with them on the 1915 NJ and 1920 US
censuses. Arthur died in 1923 and is buried in the Salem Baptist Cemetery in Salem, Salem,
New Jersey. You can view his burial information at findagrave.com here.

Amelia can be found on the 1930 and 1940 US censuses. Her older sister, Ella Thompson, is
living with her and is listed on both the 1930 and 1940 US censuses. An Omelia M Thompson
Reutter is linked to Arthur on findagrave as his wife. I have not been able to verify if this is
actually Omelia. I have found other errors on findagrave in the past and more research is
needed to determine if this is the correct Omelia.
Children of Arthur Press and Omelia Thompson
               a. Arthur Press (Apr 1913-1918)

          J. child #10
Unknown child is the child of Jesse Press and Anna Depugh. The 1910 US census says Anna
is mother of 10 children, 7 of whom are living. I have seen censuses that were wrong when
they list the number of children; however, there is also the possibility that this is correct and
that there is a child that I do not know about. I have not been able to find a reference to this
          missing child.

9. Sallie Press
Sallie Press is the daughter of David Press and Sarah Shimp. She was born 14 May 1876 in Salem, Salem, New Jersey (New Jersey, Births, 1670-1980). I do not think she was every married but she had a son, Charles, who was born 1 Oct 1892 in Salem county, New Jersey. Sallie can be found on the 1880 US and the 1885 NJ censuses and was living with her parents. The 1900 US census shows her with her parents but it also shows her son Charles. Sallie is on the 1905 NJ census but I didn't find Charles. The 1905 NJ census can be hard to find people so he may be there. In 1910, Sallie is a servant and Charles is living with his grandparents. In the 1915 NJ census, Sallie and Charles are living in the same house again. In the 1920, 1930 and 1940 US censuses, Charles is not with Sallie. In the 1940 US census, Sallie is living with several of her siblings.

David Shimp and Amanda Hitchner

David Shimp (25 March 1854 - 26 July 1930) is the son of David Shimp and Mary Jane Johnson
Amanda Hitchner (January 1861 - 1929) may be the daughter of George Hitchner and Mary Johnson but more research is needed to verify that.
David and Amanda were married on 18 March 1879 in UAC, Salem, NJ and they had 3 children:
   1. Henrietta (Etta) C Shimp (18 March 1881-30 October 1937)

   3. Emma Shimp (born 11 Dec 1889)
   4. Joel Schafeler (foster son) can be found on the 1910 and 1915 census records
The family can be found on numerous US and NJ census records. Both are buried in the Friesburg Emanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery in Friesburg, Salem, NJ
A granddaughter named Caroline Shimp (born about 1914) lived with them on the 1920 and 1930 censuses. I am not sure who she is. More research is needed.

Henrietta (Etta) Shimp (18 March 1881-30 October 1937) married Frank Bitters Elwell (8 May 1883-11 September 1964) about 1905. Frank Elwell is the son of David Elwell and Lillian. Henrietta and Frank are buried in the Canton Baptist Cemetery in Canton, Salem, New Jersey.
      They had 8 children:
         1. Kenneth Elwell (12 Aug 1906 - July 1968)
         2. David Elwell (b 1909)
         3. Emma L Elwell (b 1911)

         6. Horace C Elwell (19 October 1917 - April 1980) married Lillian ?
         7. born about 1922
         8. born about 1925

George Hitchner Shimp (14 January 1886-28 August 1965) married Elizabeth Anna Sweatman (22 June 1888-9 July 1965) between 1910-1912.
      They had 6 children:
         1. Mary Shimp (26 January 1912 - 23 November 1978) married Francis H Page
         2. Leona B Shimp (17 January 1914 - 30 November 1985) married ? Boesz
         3. Belford Shimp (19 June 1916 - November 1966)
         4. David Lester Shimp (1 October 1921 - 13 February 2002) married Frances Miles
         5. born about 1929
         6. born about 1934

Emma Shimp (born 11 December 1889) -- I have found information that leads me to believe that Emma married Walter Allen and that both passed away in 1919. However more research is needed to verify this information.

14 September 2011

Well I havent posted for a really long time and I am very sorry. We moved last December into an older house and have been really busy remodeling it. We are getting close to being finished (with the interior at least) and with the kids back in school and the weather turning cooler I am itching to get back to my family history. I have worked on it some over the past year but I havent had time to post any new information here. As I unpacked my family history boxes after the move I realized they were a jumbled mess. My goal over the next few months is to make sense of the mess and get re-organized. As I organize I will post new information or add to what I already have posted.
The way I originally posted info is..I started with Johannes and Elizabeth and worked my way toward the present. My thinking was that then it would be in somewhat of an order. However, when someone checks the blog they never know if i am posting new info so I will add a post before JOhannes and Elizabeths and I will tell what new posts there are and how to find them.
As always I would love to know of any information that anyone can add to what I have. Feel free to comment on a post with additional info or to email me the info.

Daniel died in 1837. I found 2 records in FELC for marriages for a Catherine Shimp. I dont know if one or both are marriages for her but I made a note here for future reference. I need to look into the matter further.
1- Josiah Evans and Catherine Shimp, both of Allowaystown. 30 Apr 1847. FELC p 104
2- Palser Smith Drummond and Catherine Shimp, both of U. A. (Upper Allowaystown) Creek. 27 Mar 1851. FELC 108 1/2

Daniel's parents are George Johann Shimp and Ann Mary Folk.
